Port Dover
Debbie Near, a native of southern Ontario, has been painting for over 20 years. After a long career in engineering, she has recently retired to Port Dover. From her home studio she applies her formal and informal training to her compositions. Her artist's eye is attracted to bold colour, contrasts in light, rhythmic patterns, textures or the interplay of shapes. Her colour palette is influenced by the works of Canadians such as Thomson, Carson, Harris and Carr. Sky, water and trees are recurring elements in her paintings. She works in multiple mediums including oil, acrylic and water colour and in recent years has been incorporating the art of sumi-e, an ancient form of Japanese painting, into her practice.
