Preparing Artwork Images for Uploading - Youth Art Exhibition
Careful preparation of artwork images, starting with well photographed work is required for both the application process as well as for uploading images into the artist's online gallery once accepted into the Festival.
Some tips for photographing quality images:
- Use a high quality cell phone camera or an SLR camera if you have access to one.
- Photograph your work in a room with soft, even light. Avoid direct hard lighting. Do not use Flash.
- If possible, on a soft cloudy, diffused day, you can take your work outside to photograph.
- Do not include any distracting background; crop leaving only your artwork.
- If your work is framed or has a glossy finish, using flash is out of the question.
- Put the work flat against a wall at a 45-degree angle to a window with indirect light.
- Use a tripod to adjust for the angle if the artwork hangs out from the wall.
- Choose the correct white balance to make sure that your colours do not get distorted.

Image Formatting Instructions
- Valid file types: .jpeg or .png.
- Artists are encouraged to submit original artworks created within the last three years.
- Maximum size: images should be no larger than 1024 x 1024 pixels and 4MB (max) in size. Images that exceed this size will be automatically resized to fit and may be distorted.
- Minimum size: no less than 700 x 700 pixels (height & width) NB: Larger images will present better.
- Images should be cropped to show only the work. No frame, watermark, signature, or background is to be included (exceptions re: included backgrounds are 3D objects such as sculptures, ceramics, woodturning objects or if a frame /mat is unique and significant to the artwork presentation…an example would be an oval opening in the mat to create a Victorian look for a portrait photograph) If the frame is an integral part of the art, it may be included.
- To resize your images correctly without Photoshop, for both MAC and PC users, for instructions go to https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/how-to-resize-an-image/
- The Naming Convention must be used to name artwork image file Jpegs or PNGs before uploading: Must be named as follows: ARTIST NAME_TITLE_YEAR (e.g., Jane Yetobe_Summer Day_2022) The year refers to when the artwork was created. Separate familiar and surname with a space and use underscores between artist name, title and year. The naming convention enables the website search engine to locate artwork by artist name, by title or by year created if a potential client is looking for a specific artist, title or new work by year created.
- Gallery Banner: Your banner size should be 1920 pixels x 640 pixels
- Profile Photo: 750 pixels on the longest side works well. The photo can be square (750 x 750 pixels) or a 4:5 ratio (600 pixels wide x 750 pixels tall). The minimum image size is 600 pixels on the longest side (portrait photo).
